The sermons written for the first Sunday after the epiphany, according to the medieval order of the pericopes, are based on the story of 12-year-old Jesus teaching in the temple (Luke 2:41-52). Therefore, the duties of parents and children are usually presented in these sermons. A following of this pericopal tradition can be found among 16th-century Hungarian publications in the books of the pastors Péter Bornemisza, István Beythe and György Kulcsár, and the priest Miklós Telegdi. Through their sermons, I examine how these authors wrote about the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ child as well as what methods they offered for improving the behaviour and morals of said ‘bad’ child.

Jónás története ma is erőteljesen hat a képzelőerőre, a főszereplő ellentmondásos jelleme pedig kiváló azonosulási lehetőséget kínál a mai olvasó számára is, s talán éppen ez a magyarázata annak, hogy a próféta történetét azok is ismerik, akik nem különösképpen ismerik a Bibliát, azonban üzenetét még akkor is megértik, ha nem vallják magukénak a keresztyén értékrendet. A történet és a főszereplő ismertsége szinte kézenfekvő lehetőségként kínálja fel Jónás könyvét a lelkigondozás eszközéül, ugyanis a kétségekkel, félelmekkel és a maga számára is ellentmondásos érzelmekkel, indulatokkal küzdő mai ember megnyugtató válaszokat találhat Jónás történetében. Ez a dolgozat tehát Jónás könyvének és történetének lelkigondozói aspektusait igyekszik feltárni, éspedig azzal a reménységgel, hogy ez az ószövetségi írás – sok egyéb mellett – nemcsak esztétikai élményt nyújt, hanem gyógyítani is képes.
