Miután az evangéliumot ismertető tudósok egyetértettek abban, hogy ez az irat Kr. u. a 2. században keletkezett, némely újságíró mégis fölvetette annak a lehetőségét, hogy Júdás evangéliuma olyan hagyományanyagot is megőrzött, amely régebbi és megbízhatóbb annál, ami kanonikus evangéliumokban lelhető fel. Így Júdás evangéliumának bemutatása célzatossá és kétértelmű vált a nagy nyilvánosság előtt.
