This is a study of Isaiah 18-20, three chapters in the so-called Isaianic prophecies concerning the nations, Isaiah 13-23 (24-27). Beyond being located close to each other in this literary corpus, there is at least one common element that ties these three chapters together: Isaiah 18-20 deal with two neighbouring countries of the Nile, Kush and Egypt respectively. The two lands were politically closely related in the era of the prophet Isaiah, so that addressing them in proximity to each other should not be surprising in a book set in the period of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (Isaiah 1:1). Through a detailed analysis of the three chapters I hope to contribute to a better understanding of the collection of prophecies on the nations in the book of Isaiah and, more remotely, of the wider phenomenon of prophecies concerning the nations, so prevalent in the Hebrew Bible.

Magyar református teológiánk évtizedek óta egy teljesen indokolt feszülésben munkálkodik. Keresi az utat a tárgyilagos tudományosság és a gyülekezeti felhasználhatóság között. Joggal meg akar felelni egy általában vett tudományosságnak, de az elvont, steril tudóskodást nem engedheti meg magának, mert sem akkora tudós csapatot nem tud kiállítani, mint nyugati testvéregyházai, sem olyan anyagi és felszerelési fedezettel nem rendelkezik, mint amazok. Így, akik igényt tartanak arra, hogy munkájukat tudománynak tartsák, igyekeznek egy átlagos színvonalon maradni, s közben megfelelni annak, amit az igehirdető egyház elvár tőlük.

Sok neve van Istennek az Írásban: Teremtő, az Úr, pásztor, hős, harcos, útmutató, vár, király, megváltó, kiváltó, apa, anya, hitves, gyógyító, tanító, mester, fazekas, szobrász, ének, tápláló, eltartó, Izráel Szentje, vándorbot, erő, út, béke, társ, vigasz és még mi minden, „Hogy megtudják napkelettől napnyugtáig: senki sincs rajtam kívül, én vagyok az Úr, és nincs más! Harmatozzatok, egek, felülről, és a felhők hullassanak igazságot! Nyíljék meg a föld, teremjen szabadulást, és igazság sarjadjon vele! Én, az Úr, teremtettem azt.” (Ézs 45,6.8)
