In his 1583 ritual entitled Agendarius, which was innovative in many respects in comparison to its Hungarian predecessors, Bishop Miklós Telegdi of Pécs, the administrator of the diocese of Esztergom, added sample-like sermons to the rituals of the administration of the sacraments accompanying the great turning points of life (viz. baptism, confirmation, wedding etc.). He was presumably guided chiefly by pastoral considerations. For the second edition of 1596 (published after Telegdi’s death), the editors added a second funeral sermon, clearly intended for a more educated, urban audience – judging from the scholarly Latin quotations and the general tone. A comparison of the structure and content of the two speeches provides useful conclusions as to what the ecclesiastical authorities of the time considered advisable to preach at the time of death to mourners lacking basic schooling and what to the more learned audience.

This volume contains selected papers from the broader field of History of Christian Doctrines, and more specifically from Patristics and Reformation studies, but also from the border between them. Most of them were written in the academic year 2014-2015, during my MA studies in the field of Patristics at the Theological University of the (vrijgemaakt) Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, in Kampen. The main topic of the MA programme was the Baptism in the Early Church, therefore the most of these papers presents various aspects of this question. In the following few paragraphs I will present short summary of each paper from this volume.

A 2014-es esztendő gróf losonci Bánffy Miklós emlékéveként marad fenn a köztudatban, az író, politikus, képzőművész születésének 140. évfordulóját ünnepelték határon innen és túl. De meg kell emlékeznünk elhunytáról is annak 65. évében. Ebből az alkalomból tesszük közzé dr. Ravasz László (1882—1975) református püspök gyászbeszédének kézzel javított gépiratos szövegét. Ez a Dunamelléki Református Egyházkerület Ráday Levéltárában őrzött hagyatékában maradt fenn.

Varga Zsigmond életútja, sorsa azért különleges, mert a magyar történelem egyik viharos szakaszának hamisítatlan lenyomatát láthatjuk benne. Ha visszatekintünk a számára adatott hét évtizedre, és személyes sorsát ennek az időkeretnek históriájában szemléljük, akkor ez az időszak a magyar kultúrtörténet egyik utolsó fénykorát, az első világháborút, a két világháború közötti éveket, a második nagy világégést és egy újabb sötét kor kezdetét öleli fel.

A görög nyelv tanulmányozásának fontossága - ezt a címet viseli az a tanulmány, amelyet Melanchthon 1549-ben készített és adott át Vitus Winshemiusnak elmondásra. Ebben már teljesen letisztulva jelenik meg a görög nyelv jelentősége a lelkészképzésben. Beszéde elején zavaros időkről beszél: a sátán pusztítással fenyegeti az egyházakat és az iskolákat.
