Állítólag hallgatag ember volt, és titkait sem osztotta meg másokkal. Amikor festményeivel jelentkezett, foglalkozása miatt kapta a Le Douanier melléknevet, hogy megkülönböztethessék Theodor Rousseau festőtől. 1886-ban állított ki először a Függetlenek Szalonjában (Salon des Independents).
