Erasmus egy évvel a reformáció beindulása előtt, 1516-ban jelentette meg az általa lefordított Újszövetséget, amelyet ő Novum Instrumentumnak, nevezett. A fordítás előszavában, a Paraclesis traktátusban már hangsúlyozta, hogy minden embernek, tehát a laikusoknak is olvasniuk kell Szentírást. Műveiben gyakran kritizálta a papságot és a kiüresedett rítusokat, a belső, mélyebb kegyesség buzdította olvasóit.

Henri Rousseau kistisztviselő volt egy ügyvéd mellett, de mert nem volt szíve árverési pecséteket ütni az adósok bútoraira, inkább másodfokú vámtisztviselői állást vállalt a párizsi beviteli vámnál, és ilyen minőségben dolgozott a Montrouge-kapunál, a Tournelle hídon és a Porte de Meudonnál, s közben tájképvázlatokat készített. Állítólag hallgatag ember volt, és titkait sem osztotta meg másokkal. Amikor festményeivel jelentkezett, foglalkozása miatt kapta a Le Douanier melléknevet, hogy megkülönböztethessék Theodor Rousseau festőtől. 1886-ban állított ki először a Függetlenek Szalonjában (Salon des Independents).

The occult, superstitions, divinisation, sorcery, spiritualism were abominations all to Yahweh and brought about His judgment. Yahweh made His will known through revelation, by the aid of His prophets, whose words would be clearly understandable to the people in contrast with the ambiguous and mysterious spells of those who worked with magic and divinisation. Israel must be blameless in regard to every form of divinisation, magic or spiritism.
