This paper is an expanded and somewhat more elaborated version of an earlier study in which I tried to give a general overview on the word-usage concerning the passion of Jesus Christ in the early Christian creeds. The purpose of this short paper is in part to give a comparative presentation of the sufferings of Lord Jesus Christ in the Western Creeds, and in part I also try to define the role of mentioning the name of Pontius Pilatus in them.

Azt a megtisztelő feladatot kaptam, hogy vezessek fel három párhuza- mosan zajló előadást. Ezek az előadások – az előadók és a hallgatók reménysége szerint – összetalálkoznak, összeérnek majd. Szóval az a feladatom, hogy ráhangoljam a tisztelt kollégákat ezekre a párhuzamos előadásokra. A rendelkezésemre álló félórát arra használom, hogy vitatkozzam egy nyolcvanéves híres-hírhedt szöveggel, amelyet Makkai Sándor írt 1937-ben. Ez az írás a lelombozó Nem lehet címet viseli (mármint nem lehet kisebbségiként létezni), és annak idején szó szerint kiverte a biztosítékot az erdélyi értelmiségiek körében.

In der ersten Hälfte des Aufsatzes gibt der Verfasser je eine globale und eine lokale Lagebeschreibung. Der heutigen globalen Selbstgefährdung der Menschheit (einem Auswuchs des „westlichen“ Geistes) wird eine nicht minder sichtbare, aber jene zerstörerische Kraft weit übertreffende andere globale Macht entgegengestellt: die umfassende Macht des Geistes Gottes, repräsentiert durch die Gemeinschaft der Geheiligten, aber präsent nicht nur in der Kirche. Die lokale Lagebeschreibung präsentiert die siebenbürgische reformierte Kirche als Minderheitenkirche, als Kirche an der Grenze von Ost und West und als Volkskirche, mit den spezifischen Aufgaben, die aus diesen drei Charakteristika abzuleiten sind.

Csalódást fogok okozni, ha azt képzelik, hogy én borúlátó ember vagyok. Egész életem és szolgálatom arról szólt, hogy dacolva a statisztikák negatív adataival, teljesen pozitív életképet, Erdély- és magyarságképet hirdettem, amelyet most szeretnék elétekbe is tárni.

In this short paper I would like to provide a comparative analysis of the passages concerning the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Early Christian confessions (among them the Apostolic Creed1 as well), because these passages are frequently the source of theological misunderstanding and debates. The main question which urged me to do this research had occurred in relation with the Apostolic Creed. How do we say correctly: ‘I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell…’ or ‘I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered, under Pontius Pilate He was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell…’? I shall try to answer this question by analysing the relevant passages of the creeds which were composed in the first six centuries.
