Although György Enyedi’s (1555-1597) posthumous exegetical masterpiece Explicationes (Cluj, 1598) did not contain any explicit statements on political thinking, his Hungarian sermons testify his theoretical interest towards political philosophy. The paper focuses on sermons 67, 68 and 184, wherein Enyedi formulates his version of natural law. Due to his antitrinitarian theological presuppositions and his philosophical anthropology deeply inherent in the former, Enyedi’s position does not match fully the standard versions of natural law of his time. on the one hand, Enyedi’s approach proves to be much more intellectual in character than the voluntaristic correction of Thomist natural law in Scholastic-Suáresian theory. on the other hand, the antitrinitarian dismissal of original sin as a chief anthropological motif results in differences from the protestant natural law tradition, as Melanchthon developed it in the 1530s.

Olyan reformátussá, aki reformátusságát a keresztyén élet és gondolkodás kezdeteire és forrásaira alapozza. Ez azt jelenti: el kell sajátítania a szereteten és a gondoskodó szolgálatkészségen felépülő életformáját, amelyet az imádság és könyörgés tart fenn, és idegenként kell élnie: idegenként, de nem a történelem során végrehajtott politikai döntések következtében, hanem egy lényegesebb isteni döntés alapján, amely a keresztyéneket a mennyek országának örököseivé tette és így mennyei polgárjoggal ruházta fel őket. Tökéletesen tudatában vagyok annak, milyen nehéz megtenni ezt a teljes fordulatot. Még a Zsidókhoz írott levél olvasóit is figyelmeztetni kellett arra, hogy el ne forduljanak attól, amit Isten kezdett el velük.

It is a challenge to the Reformed Church in Erdély to become really Reformed: reformed according to the beginnings and sources of Christian life and thought. That means: developing a lifestyle of love and care sustained by prayer and intercession, living as foreigners, – foreigners, not due to political decisions of the past, but due to a much more fundamental decision of the Lord to make Christians heirs of a heavenly kingdom, with a citizenship in heaven. I am very well aware that it will be very hard to accomplish this new U-turn.
