The sermons written for the first Sunday after the epiphany, according to the medieval order of the pericopes, are based on the story of 12-year-old Jesus teaching in the temple (Luke 2:41-52). Therefore, the duties of parents and children are usually presented in these sermons. A following of this pericopal tradition can be found among 16th-century Hungarian publications in the books of the pastors Péter Bornemisza, István Beythe and György Kulcsár, and the priest Miklós Telegdi. Through their sermons, I examine how these authors wrote about the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ child as well as what methods they offered for improving the behaviour and morals of said ‘bad’ child.

Canaanite Abominations as Presented in the Book of Deuteronomy. A Theological Evaluation. Before entering in the Promised Land the people of Israel were told not to follow the forbidden practices of the polytheistic nations (Deut 18, 9–14), to avoid all kinds of magical and superstitious practices designed to discover the will of gods, or even to compel the gods to action in certain ways. The occult, superstitions, divinisation, sorcery, spiritualism were abominations all to Yahweh and brought about His judgment. Yahweh made His will known through revelation, by the aid of His prophets, whose words would be clearly understandable to the people in contrast with the ambiguous and mysterious spells of those who worked with magic and divinisation. Israel must be blameless in regard to every form of divinisation, magic or spiritism.

A 'Protestáns Szemle' [...] az egyházi életműködés minden ágát felölelő vagy azzal érintkező tudományok mezején búvárkodik, fejteget vagy vitáz: ezt az alapelvet igyekszik szem előtt tartani és attól – legalább szándékosan s öntudatosan – nem akar eltérni. Azért, egyfelől a maga körében, t. i. a magyar protestáns felekezet körében, az egy alapon álló árnyalatok közt az eszmecserék s tárgyilagos vitatkozásnak szabad tért nyit s az ellennézeteket, csak tudományos érvekkel jőjjenek, meghallgatja, elfogadja, értékük szerint méltányolja. De nem szorítkozva csak a magunk szűk körére, tért nyit a külföldi protestáns egyházi élet s tudományos mozgalmak minden általános érdekű jelenségeinek s azokat részint ismertetőleg, részint vitatólag fogja olvasói elé hozni....

Ezzel a szerény munkával, a Krisztus-hívők ama csoportja iránt kívánom leróni tiszteletemet és szeretetemet, akik a baptistált Jézus Krisztustól soha — még a küzdelem, szenvedés idejében — sem maradtak, el. Akik az ő „Mesterükért" éhséget, szomjúságot, fogságot, botozást egyaránt elviseltek. Sőt a legborzasztóbb gyötrelem óráiban; a vérpad, lenyakaztatás, vízbefojtás vagy a megégetés kínos perceiben is, bátor bizonyságtevői voltak az Űr Jézus Krisztusnak.
