Ez a dolgozat a 140 éve született Gachal János református lelkipásztor-esperes-püspök életét követhetjük az ő nyomtalan eltűnéséig. Szolgálata nagyobb részét a Délvidéken töltötte el, ahol megtapasztalta mindkét világháború borzalmait, és a körülötte hirtelen megváltozott világban ember tudott maradni. Segített, akin tudott: kommunistákat, zsidókat, szerb partizánokat mentett meg. Kiváló érzékkel szervezte a gyülekezetek életét. Szolgálata idején nem csak az egyházi, hanem az egész település kulturális és gazdasági élete is fellendült. 1944-ben szerbek által végrehajtott etnikai tisztogatás áldozata lett. Ma sem tudni pontosan, hogy mi történt vele, miután elvitte egy partizán, majd nyomtalanul eltűnt, s hogy hol temették el. Egyesek úgy vélik, hogy még elhurcolása napján agyonverték. A dolgozat végig kíséri a délvidéki magyar református egyház szervezeti alakulását is az Osztrák-Magyar Monarchia szétesése és a második világháború alatt történt határmódosítások idején.

Freude aus der Verheissung des Evangeliums – Pfarrdienst in Diaspora und Volkskirche – so lautet das Thema unserer Tagung. Wenn man mich vor fünfundvierzig Jahren, als ich mein Theologiestudium abschloss, mit diesem Thema konfrontiert hätte, so hätte ich gesagt. Ja, selbstverständlich! Ich freute mich auf den Dienst in meiner Kirche. Ich wollte das Evangelium verkündigen. Wir waren damals von der Bibel und von der Theologie Rudolf Bultmanns geprägt, ein bisschen hatten wir auch von Karl Barth mitbekommen. Ich wollte damals nur eines: Pfarrer werden in meiner Kirche, der Evangelisch-Reformierten Landeskirche des Kantons Zürich in der Schweiz.

Psalm-singing in the Community of Therapeutae Based on De vita contemplativa by Philo of Alexandria. The Therapeutae’s ascetic devotion is characterized not only by searching the scriptures, meditation and prayer but also by singing of hymns and psalms. Hymns were composed by the principals of the community, they were those who taught the community members to sing them and they continually enriched the hymnal with new ones. The Essenes’ and Therapeutae’s psalm-singing indicates first of all the common Old Testament origin. However these religious communities had different self-identity from that of the normative Jews and this identity required for a special psalm-poetry to be accomplished. The Therapeutae’s psalms remind us of the church psalm-tradition characterized, just like the Essene hymns, by responsive singing and refrains.
