However, this passage has some features that inspire to further study. These include seemingly pointless repetitions, tensions within the text and contradictions with other verses in the book of Genesis, which lead us to conclude that the text of the pericope in question has undergone significant changes over time. In this study, we will attempt to deduce possible textual layers and reconstruct the sources used, starting from the canonical text and working backwards in time.

A vizsgált igeszakasz (ApCsel 17,16 34) nem csupán az apostol prédikációját tartalmazza, hanem a kerettörténetet is. A 16–21. versek azokat az előzményeket és körülményeket beszélik el, amelyek folytán az apostol az Areopágoszra kerül, a tulajdonképpeni athéni beszéd a 22–31. versekben áll előttünk, szakaszt záró 32– 34. versekben pedig a hallgatók reakciójáról és az elhangzott igehirdetés hatásáról szerzünk tudomást.
