Family and kinship. Who cares for the family’s concerns today? Practice obedience and love (in the family), for this is pleasing in the Lord (Colossians 3:18–4:1). In an era of secularisation, individuals have drifted from the familial narratives found in the Bible, prioritising personal over communal interests. This shift prompts theologians to consider how they might use Scripture to address contemporary ethical transformations. The early apologists offer a model for engaging with these changes, having adapted their teachings to the Hellenistic context while infusing them with Christian values. This is exemplified by the “Haustafels” (household codes) in the apostolic epistles, which I examine for their Christian ethos and links to ancient economic texts. These codes’ principles—responsibility and mutual respect—remain relevant and vital for harmonious family and community life today.

Examining Some Ethical Issues in the Context of War -- One of the main questions of this paper is whether the arguments in defence of war can be coupled with equal concern for the laws of war. While a permissive reading of the classical, theological just war tradition draws a number of conclu-sions that can be debated, this essay has attempted to draw attention to the fact that Augustine's questions of disordered political commitments (loves) are insep-arable from the more familiar questions of “right reason”, “right power” and “right intention”. Augustine’s reading reminds us that political desires still determine not only decisions to enter into armed conflict, but also the application of the inter-national law. On the one hand, politics is a means of influencing the dominant powers, a means of spreading their values, but also a means of holding them to account. It is also the voice of the oppressed and the vulnerable.

Ebben a részben főleg a szociológus és filozófus Zygmund Bauman (1925–2017) társadalomról alkotott felfogásáról lesz szó. Elöljáróban néhány gondolat erejéig az ő személyéről és az úgynevezett likvid modernitás fogalmáról szólok.

Pál apostol mindkét Thesszalonikai levélben hivatkozik az apostoli hagyomány átadására és átvételére. Milyen felvilágosítással szolgálnak ezek a hivatkozások az apostoli tradíció jellegzetes vonásaira nézve? Formailag és tartalmilag mennyiben hasonlított e folyamat a korabeli bölcseleti és vallási irányzatok tanítói gyakorlatához, illetve mennyiben tért el azoktól? Milyen témakörben hivatkozik az apostol a hagyományozás folyamatára? Milyen szerepe van a tradíciónak az igaz hit kialakulásában? Vajon a szóbeli és írásbeli hagyományra történő hivatkozás (2Thessz 2,15) alátámasztja-e a római katolikus egyháznak a tradícióról alkotott felfogását, vagy igazolja-e a protestáns egyházak tanítását? Ezekre a kérdésekre kívánok felelni az első és második Thesszalonikai levél vizsgálata rendjén.

A keresztyének társadalmi felelősségéről Péter első levele az ún. házitáblákban beszél, amelyek a levél második részét képezik (2,11– 4,11). Ezekben az intelmekben összefoglalja azokat az erkölcsi elveket, illetve magatartásformákat, amelyek a keresztyének felelős életvitelére vonatkoznak. Az erkölcsi tanításokat csak akkor érthetjük helyesen, ha figyelembe vesszük azt a szövegkörnyezetet, amelybe a levélíró beágyazta azokat.
