My interest in the topic of suffering has been stimulated essentially by the experiences from the pastoral visits and pastoral encounters in a Transylvanian congregation where I work as a pastor. The interchange with the believers and their hardship lead me to conclude that many homes along the streets there are houses of suffering, many life-stories are stories of suffering. Often the suffering encountered at the heart of the believers’ home is something what makes them to “live as if they will never die and die as if they had never lived”. Nevertheless, accompanying the believers in their search for meaning and comfort I realized that they continue to believe in God despite suffering, impoverishment and oppression. But what I often experience is a struggle with ethical shortcuts in the midst of suffering.

A koronavírus-járvány következményeit értékelő magyar nyelvű teológiai, ekléziológiai, liturgiai szakirodalom a járvány megjelenése óta egyre gyarapodik. A közölt tanulmányok átfogó teológiai értékeléseket, szempontokat, véleményeket, észrevételeket, reflexiókat, kritikákat fogalmaztak meg a koronavírus-járvány alatti vallásos és egyházi élet két fontos témájával kapcsolatosan: a távistentiszteletek (online istentiszteletek) és az úrvacsora kérdésköreit, valamint az ezekhez kapcsolódó problémaköröket is érintették.

This paper presents the doctrine on baptism in the Haereticarum fabularum compendium of Theodoret of Cyrus. From this presentation we learn that Theodoret presents in this work a multi-contextual image of the “all-holy” baptism. The divine origin of the sacrament determined Theodoret to offer it a special place within his theological system. This special place is expressed through the setting of the chapter concerning baptism as well: it is put between the soteriological Christology and the chapters concerning Theodoret’s eschatology, the latter being an introduction to the ethical chapters.

This paper was my MA thesis, and its topic is the reception of the teaching of the Church Fathers concerning the baptism in the 1559 edition of John Calvin’s Institutes. In this thesis, I try to unfold some of the factors that determined the way Calvin used the writings of the Church Fathers in formulating his doctrine of baptism. After presenting the patristic quotations related to the ‘theoretical’ theology of baptism, I will present the quotations and references that are related rather to the practice of baptism. Here I analyse the references regarding the doctrine of baptism coming from the Donatists, the problematic of emergency baptism and women’s right to baptize. Finally, I will present the references from Inst IV 16, dealing with infant baptism. In the last chapter of this study, I will try to summarize the conclusions of the research. I hope the reader will have a clearer image on Calvin’s use of the Church Fathers’ theological heritage on baptism in the Institutes.

This volume contains selected papers from the broader field of History of Christian Doctrines, and more specifically from Patristics and Reformation studies, but also from the border between them. Most of them were written in the academic year 2014-2015, during my MA studies in the field of Patristics at the Theological University of the (vrijgemaakt) Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, in Kampen. The main topic of the MA programme was the Baptism in the Early Church, therefore the most of these papers presents various aspects of this question. In the following few paragraphs I will present short summary of each paper from this volume.

E rövid tanulmány a Karl Barth Egyházi Dogmatikájának III/4-es kötetében bemutatott hitvallás és imádság értelemzésére összpontosít. A hitvallás és az imádság a keresztyén gondolkodás központi kérdése, de legtöbbször csupán a keresztyén hitvallásos kegyesség témájaként jelenik meg a theológiai irodalomban. E rövid tanulmány arra keres választ, hogy az imádság és a hitvallás hordoz-e egyszerre kifelé és befelé ható etikai töltetet a keresztyén gondolkodásban. E témát Barth a sajátos etika területéhez illesztve tárgyalja. A hitvallás – legyen az elrejtett, vagy pedig kimondott – mindig Krisztusra mutat, s mint ilyen nem kerülheti meg a világ valóságának megerősítését, illetve annak kritikai értékelését. Így alapvetően az etikai tudatosság kifejezőjévé válik. Ehhez hasonlóan az Isten kijelentésében gyökerező imádáság, amely az Isten és ember kapcsolatát aktualizálja, minden helyzetben az Isten és a felebarát melletti döntés alkalmává lesz.

A tanulmány Péter első és második levelének főbb etikai aspektusait tárgyalja. Megállapítja, hogy a kis-ázsiai keresztyének számára e levelek értékes és aktualizált etikai perspektívákat nyújtanak. Egyik levél esetében sem találkozunk letisztult etikával, ugyanis a szerzőnek nem célja valamiféle etikai szabályrendszer meghirdetése, hanem Isten és a hívő ember kapcsolatának minél tisztább megélése és átélése. Az 1Pt a szenvedésben tanúsított jócselekedetekre és az engedelmességre összpontosít az intuiciótól az imitatio Christi-ig történő ívelésben, a 2Pt pedig a törekedés és részesedés feszültségébe ágyazza a kapcsolatot.
