Ez a doktori dolgozat csupán az Institutio 1559-es kiadásának a szabad akaratról szóló fejezeteiben fellelhető Khrüszosztomosz-idézetekkel foglalkozik, és igyekszik kideríteni, milyen teológiai szempontokat, vagy akár érdekeket akart érvényesíteni Kálvin, amikor ezekben a fejezetekben megfogalmazta az antiókhiai teológiai iskola emlőin nevelkedett pátriárka szabad akarattal kapcsolatos tanításáról alkotott véleményét.

Heinz Schlaffer (Elhotten, 1939) stuttgarti emeritus professzor Die kurze Geschichte der deutschen Literatur című másfél száz oldalas irodalomtörténeti esszéje még a kiadás évében, 2002-ben került a kezembe egy németországi konferencia alkalmával, s útban hazafelé a vonaton egy lélegzetre el is ol vastam. A kissé provokatív tartalmú, briliáns stílusú írás akkor annyira lenyűgözött, hogy elhatároztam, a kis kötetet itthon ismertetem.

The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it sets the historical context in which Aphrahat wrote his Demonstrations and deals with the interesting relationship between his writings, ‘against the Jews’ and the Sassanian persecution of Christians. It also treats his refutation of the Jewish charges. Secondly, it addresses his ‘unique’ view of christology which is not in line with the Nicene decision concerning one aspect yet at the same time it is congruent with it. The paper also tries to point out that his view on christology was ‘unique’ but not exceptional in the Early Church.
