Apostle Paul and the Scriptures. An overview of current research and the price of progress. Among Dezső Kállay's biblical studies, the letters of the apostle Paul appear with special emphasis. Paul’s interpretation of the Scriptures was deeply rooted in the active Scriptural tradition of his era, not isolated in hermeneutical vacuum. The Scriptures represented not just the written text but also its interpretation, thus the Israelites’ faith was likened to both a solid foundation and spiritual sustenance, as they “drank from the spiritual rock” (1 Cor 10:4). This study aims to map the key research trajectories concerning Paul’s citations of the Bible. It begins by addressing fundamental issues within accepted consensuses, then evaluates the current state of research, informed by the six-year efforts of the Paul and Scripture Seminar under the Society of Biblical Literature and its two resultant publications. We may conclude that we know more and less at the same time.

Isa 8:16 is considered a key reference regarding the formation of the book of Isaiah and the role of prophetic disciples in this process. This article argues, however, that originally this verse had a more limited significance. The instruction to which v. 16 refers is to be identified with vv. 12-15 rather than an early ‘book’ of Isaiah. The expression ‘the instructed ones’ (of YHWH rather than the prophet) is applied to the prophet’s audience. This term reflects Isaiah’s characteristic view of prophesying as an act of instruction and prophecy as a form of teaching, and it does not presuppose the existence of any prophetic school. The view that sealing the instruction would allude to preserving prophetic teaching for the posterity is discounted here in favour of understanding the symbolic act as a metaphor from the legal sphere refering to authentication, with no inherent temporal significance.

Beszélhetünk-e tanítványságról az Ószövetségben? Játszott-e valamiféle szerepet az Ószövetség abban, hogy a tanítványság ilyen formát öltött a zsidóságon belül?

A Kr.e. 180 körüli Jézus, Sirák fia könyvében találjuk az első utalást arra nézve, hogy a prófétai iratokat Hóseástól Malakiásig egyetlen prófétai iratnak tekintik. A qumráni 4. számú barlangból előkerült kéziratból az derül ki, hogy a tizenkét iratot mindig együtt, egyetlen tekercsre írták. Ám a Kispróféták címfelirattal vagy valamilyen bevezetéssel kezdődnek, melyek formai és tartalmi jellegzetességeik alapján jól elkülöníthetőek egymástól. A Kispróféták könyve a prófétákat olyan sorrendben prezentálja, amely szerint a prófétai szó végigkísérte Izráel történetét, és jó előre megjövendölte történelmének főbb eseményeit. A mű tehát tartalmilag és teológiailag is jól átgondolt koncepcióval rendelkezik, ami miatt egységes szerkesztői elvek alapján elrendezett gyűjtemény benyomását kelti.

A vers vitán felül Zofóniástól származó anyag, s annak az egységnek része, mely Júda és Jeruzsálem ítéletéről szól (1,2–2,3), fő témája pedig az Úr napja.
